The national average for euthanasias for unwanted cats and dogs is 16 per 1,000 population.  Simi Valley’s rate was above the national average when this low cost spay/neuter program was initiated in 1998.  Euthanasia counts were 1,502 for a population of 90,000 or a kill rate of 16.7 per 1,000 population.

Today’s euthanasia rate has dropped dramatically for Simi Valley.  The euthanasia count for 2007 stands at about 200 for a population of 120,000 which equals a kill rate of 1.7 per 1,000 population, a significant improvement from 1998.
